A chance meeting in 1988 brings Alison and Kate, friends from university twenty-eight years ago, together again. Alison confides in Kate the ordeal she has been through-an unwanted pregnancy. She tells Kate the trauma she experienced when the baby was taken away from her-a trauma from which she has never recovered and the hatred she has toward anyone who supports the Right to Esse, an extremist pro-life organisation.

She tells Kate she would like to rid the world of all of them, but as this is not feasible, she says she would start with the national president, Colleen ODay. Alison is horrified to learn that Kate has been subjected to a worse form of torture-gang rape-and to add to her anger, one of the rapists, Wayne Keys, got off on a technicality. Kate wants to throw him and the lawyer who got him off, Lyn Cullen, in a dungeon. Alison introduces Kate to her friends, Anne and Helen, who own a property in the country. They invite Alison and Kate to the property.

Kate tells Anne and Helen about the rape. All four women agree that they will make use of the property to punish Keys, Cullen, and ODay.
